Intermediate Phase
- Grades 4–6 | Approximately Ages 9–11
Turning Knowledge Into Understanding
Think | Apply | Develop
Here, the source deliberately shifts from foundational skills toward deeper thinking, application, problem-solving, communication and ownership of academic progress.
As learners become more confident academically, the Intermediate Phase challenges them to think more deeply, apply what they know and take increasing ownership of their progress.
From Knowledge to Application
- From Knowing to Applying
Learning Becomes More Independent
The Intermediate Phase represents an important progression in the learning journey.
Learners move beyond simply understanding foundational concepts and begin applying knowledge to questions, problems and new situations. They are encouraged to communicate their reasoning, investigate ideas and become increasingly responsible for how they approach their work.
- Growing Independent Learners
Taking Greater Ownership
As learners progress, they are encouraged to become active participants in their education.
They begin developing stronger organisational habits, managing tasks more independently and recognising areas where they need to improve.
This gradual independence prepares them for the greater academic expectations of the Senior Phase.
